Is Leadership Universal? Culture, Context & Effectiveness | Episode 1 – Part 1

Leadership frameworks are often presented as universal. But are they?

In the first part of our opening episode, I sit down with John Antonios – Executive Coach and Leadership Assessor – with whom I’ve worked closely for over a decade, particularly across the GCC region.

We explore the tension between leadership theory and cultural reality, including:

• What truly drives leadership effectiveness – and how it shifts across regions
• Whether leadership styles are transferable across cultures
• The challenges leaders face within distinct cultural structures
• The effectiveness of assessment tools developed primarily in Western contexts
• Whether such tools should be applied as designed – or adapted meaningfully

This conversation challenges the assumption that leadership is culturally neutral and argues for a more context-aware, deliberate approach to development and assessment.

If you’re interested in leadership effectiveness beyond slogans and surface-level advice, this series is designed for you.
